Algebraic expressions

An algebraic expression is a combination of numbers and variables. Expressions can be multiplied, divided, subtracted or added. It does not have an equal sign.

Algebraic expressions Answer series

Here we look at how to make use of the distributive law, always starting with the sign, then the whole number and lastly the variable when you distribute into a bracket.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Phasellus lobortis velit erat, sed dictum orci bibendum ut.

3

factorise

Factorising is the opposite of simplifying. With factorising we insert brackets into expressions using specific methods. When you distribute in again, you get back to the original sum.

Difference between 2 squares

Difference between squares is where you put a minus in the one bracket and a plus in the other bracket and divide the exponents by two.

Factorise trinomials

A trinomial is recognised by three terms.  The three terms are broken up and brackets inserted.

Basic Trinomials

If you struggle to factorise a trinomial, then view this recording where I explain how to factorise a trinomial step by step.

Sum and difference of two cubes

The sum and difference of two cubes is a new factorising type that is added in grade 10.  Here you divide the exponents by 3 and need to know your cubic roots.

Simplifying fractions by factorising

When you add or subtract fractions you first factorise the denominator and then get the lowest common denominator .  When you multiply , you divide or cancel out brackets that are the same.

Factorise with fractions

With fractions you get the lowest common denominator when you add or subtract and cancel out brackets when you multiply or divide fractions.

Quadratic equations always have two answers.  They form parabolas when you draw them. To solve you set them equal to zero, factorise and then solve for the x values.

Quadratic equations with fractions

The most important aspect of equations with fractions, is that the denominators have restrictions.  Here we look at how to work with restrictions and how to het the lowest common denominator when you work with variables.
